Jordan Smith: A Breakout Star
Q&A: Get to know European Tour star Jordan Smith
Jordan Smith is one of the European Tour’s breakout stars of the last two years.
He’s come right through the ranks since turning professional in 2014. He won twice on the PGA EuroPro Tour in 2015 and also won the Order of Merit which gained him a Challenge Tour card for 2016. He won two Challenge Tour events in 2016 (Red Sea Egyptian Challenge and the Ras Al Khaimah Golf Challenge) and topped the Order of Merit there, too, earning a place on the European Tour for 2017.
And he made the most of the opportunity, where he finished in the top 10 in the US PGA Championship, after bagging his first title at the Porsche European Open, winning with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff against Alexander Levy.
Smith didn’t even take up the game until he was 12, but went on to play in the 2014 Walker Cup, before turning pro in the same year. In 2018, he was also 3rd at The British Masters, and 43rd in the Race to Dubai rankings.
We caught up with Callaway’s newest signing to find out what makes him tick…
Q: What’s been your nearest brush with death?
I can’t really think of anything specific, I’m happy to say. I think probably the closest to death I’ve ever come was when I had appendicitis and it nearly exploded. It was definitely a 10 out of 10 for pain. It was awful. I couldn’t walk or even move so I was very glad to get it taken out.
Q: Have you got any party tricks?
Not really any tricks as such, but I can’t drink vodka. I mean, I can drink vodka but I shouldn’t as it makes me aggressive (laughs).
Q: Who would play you in the movie of your life?
I’d love it to be Ryan Reynolds. I think he’s brilliant and he’s a good looking chap, which is obviously essential.
Q: Where would you travel in time?
Sticking to golf, I’d love to go to Medinah for the last day of that Ryder Cup in 2012. I’d love to have witnessed the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ and been by the 18th green when Martin Kaymer holed that putt.
Q: What’s been your most embarrassing non-golfing moment?
An answer just popped into my head but I can’t really say that. It was really embarrassing but I just can’t say it, it would get me in too much trouble. Next question!
Q: Who would be in your dream fourball of non-golfers?
I’d definitely want Steven Gerrard in there, because I’m a big Liverpool fan and he’s a legend. I’d go with Ricky Gervais as well, because he’d be hilarious. I don’t think he plays golf but that wouldn’t matter. I’ve just seen his latest thing on Netflix, Humanity, and it’s just brilliant. Who else? I think I’d go for Will Ferrell because he’d be hilarious as well. I love Step Brothers, Anchor Man, Talladega Nights and pretty much all his stuff, so he’d have to be in there as well.
Q: You obviously love your comedy so do you ever go and see live stand up?
I haven’t been to see anything live, but I like to watch Live at the Apollo and that sort of thing.
Q: What’s your favourite TV show?
I’m going to get a lot of stick for this but me and my girlfriend really like cats and there’s this programme that we watch every morning before she goes to work called My Cat from Hell. It’s on Animal Planet and it’s just brilliant. It’s about really badly behaved cats and a guy who trains them and turns them all good. My girlfriend loves cats and now I’m beginning to love cats.
Q: Have you got any cats?
We’re going to get two next year. One is going to be a Blue Russian and I can’t remember the name of the other one, but it’s ginger.
Q: What’s your dream holiday destination?
We went away at the end of the year to Saint Lucia and that has to be right up there as a dream destination. But there are so many places really. I love the Maldives. You can just chill out and I love to get a room that goes straight out onto the beach. I did some snorkelling for the first time in Saint Lucia, too. That was great.
Q: What’s been your proudest non-golfing moment?
Well, it’s definitely nothing to do with school (laughs). It’s probably going to be becoming an uncle to my sister’s three kids. It’s way too soon for any of my own, but I was very proud to become an uncle.
Q: What’s been your most extravagant purchase aside from a house and car?
It’s either some really expensive aftershave I bought or the leather weekend bag I bought a couple of weeks ago. I went away with Laurie Canter for a few days and he had one I really liked so I thought I’d treat myself. It was £500 and a nice Michael Kors number.
